Albert J. Byrnes passed away peacefully at home on December 4, 2022. Al, as he was known, was the only child of Albert W. and Irene Byrnes. Al and his beloved wife of 68 years, Mary Alice, raised three children – Albert (Barbara), Kathy and Jim (Denise). Al always enjoyed seeing and hearing the exploits of his eight grandchildren – Alison (Chuck), Jenny (Chris), Ryan (Bridget), Caroline (Zac), Conor (Jeanette), Sean (Jess), Patrick (Kat) and Katie – and his ten great-grandchildren Rosie, Austin, Jack, Brendan, Declan, Luna, Noel, Lyla, Liam and Aislinn.
Al was raised in Flatbush and spent summers in East Rockaway and later Amityville where he cultivated his love of the water and boating. He would later parlay this into his service in the U.S. Coast Guard. Al graduated from Midwood High School, then joined his father at Byrnes Express, the family trucking business. After marrying in 1954, Al and Mary Alice settled in Bay Ridge and soon became active in St. Anselm's parish, with Al volunteering his time with the Boy Scouts, Winter Wonderland and the parish bazaar. Al and Mary Alice were long-time members of the Breezy Point Surf Club, where Al served on the Board of Governors and enjoyed swimming, walks to the ocean, gathering with his family, and talking to anyone and everyone. Al was the kind of person who would know your life story after talking to you for five minutes. He loved finding out about people and sharing his wisdom or historic tidbits with them. His speech was often "colorful", but his heart was always in the right place. He loved helping people including his neighbors on 82
nd
Street and others who needed it along the way. This came back to him in spades when he was the one who needed assistance.
Al was active in a variety of charitable organizations. He was a Past President of both the Cathedral Club of Brooklyn and the St. Patrick Society of Brooklyn. For many years he served as the Director of the Floor Committee at the Emerald Ball held by the Emerald Society of Long Island. He served on the Board at St. John's Residence for Boys for 30 years, retiring as Secretary. Al will be long remembered by many for his unique persona and will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace.
