Akiko Tsuruga-Magnarelli, beloved wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully in Brooklyn NY on September 13, 2025.  She was born to Koji and Hiroko Tsuruga, September 1, 1967.

Akiko began playing the Organ at 3 years old,

After graduating from the Osaka College of Music in 1988 She became a rising star in Japan, playing jazz, and meeting many prominent American musicians.

In 2001 Akiko moved to New York City, where she quickly made her mark, Working and recording with jazz legends such as Frank Wess, Lou Donaldson, Grady Tate, Jimmy Cobb, Houston Person.

Also she quickly established a steady gig at Showman's jazz club, Harlem, the #1 organ jazz club in NY city, where she played for 20 years.
Akiko recorded 10 records as a leader, her first, 'Sweet And Funky" was recognized by Downbeat Magazine as one of the 10 best records of 2007.

As her mentor Dr. Lonnie Smith said, "Akiko is here to stay".

Her Music and Spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Akiko is survived by her husband Joe Magnarelli, mother Hiroko, sister Naomi and brother Shingo.

Akiko was deeply Loved by her family in Japan and here in America.

A private celebration of life will be held for Akiko by her family.
