Aida Luz Romero, 65, died Friday, December 9, 2016 at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn following a sudden stroke.
Born in Bayamon Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of Felipe Rivera and Luz Maria Torres (both deceased). Her mother separated from her father shortly after she was born and along with her three children—Gildren Ramos (deceased), Thomas Rivera and an infant Aida, emigrated to the United States and moved to El Barrio for a better life. The family lived at 215 103 rd street, between second and third avenues, throughout her teenage years, where she developed fond memories.

Aida graduated Murray Bergtraum High School in 1969 and soon after met her husband, Jesus Romero of Hatillo, Puerto Rico, on the dance floor of Cabo Rojeno on 145 th street and Broadway. After a year of courtship, they married at Saint Cecilia's Parish on 106 th Street on November 27, 1971. Aida was 19 and her husband, 23. They moved to Sunset Park, Brooklyn where they purchased a Brownstone home, three years after being married with their toddler daughter Elena in hand. Aida would go on to having her daughter Christina five-and-a-half years later.
Her first job after high school was working as a secretary for Equitable Life Insurance Company in Manhattan. She did so until she became disabled in 1979.
Despite physical limitations due to arthritis over the past two decades, that never stopped her from living and enjoying life. Aida was a very strong willed, outspoken, and independent woman. She had no problem "telling you how it is." She took exceptional pride in her life and personal accomplishments. She was meticulous at finance and could easily be confused for an accountant. She enjoyed cooking, going to the movies, dining out, and traveling to Lancaster, Pennsylvania any chance she could as well as taking summer vacations to Puerto Rico. Family and god-centered, she never left her husband, children or grand children's side, serving as a travel navigator, babysitter, caretaker, and rock for her all of her loved ones. On any given day, you could find her riding her electronic scooter through her tree-lined neighborhood with a mission to spoil her grand kids, whether it was buying them icees, ice cream, takeout, clothes, or any of their hearts desires.
She leaves behind her husband of 45 years, Jesus; their daughters Elena and Christina Romero; five grandchildren Gabriela, Gionna and Grace Durham and Leann and Hope Rivera, respectively. In addition, she is survived by her brother Thomas Rivera; several nieces and nephews; as well extended family members and friends.
She was very much loved and will be dearly missed.
